Untitled (Magna), 2009, Ben Blacket.

Welcome!

PHOTO EYES is a place to share my passion for photography, both analogue and digital.

As well as being a photographer, I work in collections and digitisation in the museum/cultural heritage sector. I’m currently studying for a Master of Art Curatorship at the University of Melbourne (almost there!).

I have over 25 years of photographic experience. I began my career as a newspaper photojournalist and I’ve worked as a photographic assistant and digital operator for many of Australia’s leading commercial photographers, studios and production houses.

For my personal photography, I still use film. As I’ve become more digital-centric professionally (and Caronavirus restrictions only intensified our digital existence!), I’m longing to get back to the ‘craft’ of photography, to the point that I’m setting up a darkroom once again.

I’m working on my first proper photobook and hope to publish it in the next couple of years. I’ll use this blog to discuss photographic equipment and process, and my influences and inspiration.

I live and work in Castlemaine, Australia, on the traditional lands of the Dja Dja Wurrung.

Start here for my very first instalment, providing some insight into my professional journey. Stay tuned!
